"Ammos tou Kampouri" beach is the first "Plastic Free Beach" in Ayia Napa as part of the Municipality's cooperation with the "Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free" project.

A statement from the Municipality of Ayia Napa states that "the implementation of the beach is sponsored by Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed), where it supports actions against plastic pollution in the Mediterranean".

It is added that the "Plastic Free Beach" concept, which is an initiative of the "Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free" project, encourages and facilitates beach visitors to avoid the use of single-use plastic, in order to reduce plastic pollution, especially in seas.

The Mayor of Ayia Napa Christos Zannettou expressed "proud of the fact that the Municipality will participate in the BeMed Program, which aims to reduce plastic pollution".

"We know that the Mediterranean sea is full of plastics and it is imperative that we act immediately" he said and noted that "by protecting this natural treasure we are securing our tourism product for future brave local and foreign visitors".

Panagiota Koutsofta, scientific associate of the "Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free" Project, said that "the average person consumes about 5 grams of plastic every week, that is the size of a plastic card. Reducing plastic pollution now concerns each of us and we all have an active role to play in achieving this goal."

He added that "having a beachgoer carry a reusable bag is a very simple everyday move. But this can contribute the most to reducing plastic pollution and, by extension, the plastic that ends up in the natural environment and in the stomachs of consumers, through the fish they eat."

It is noted that water coolers have been installed on the beaches of Ayia Napa and with this specific initiative the Municipality aims to give visitors access to free, chilled and filtered water. A very simple move that can reduce the use of hundreds of plastic water bottles every day.

Another action is the creation of smoking points for the collection of cigarette butts, which are the main waste collected from beaches worldwide, contain plastic and are toxic to the environment.
