EXCLUSIVE: Ayia Napa: The creation of a University by the Council of Ministers has been approved

At its meeting yesterday, the Council of Ministers approved the lease of state-owned land to the interested private consortium for the establishment of a university unit in Ayia Napa. As Famagusta.News is informed, the decision was taken after the efforts of almost four years paid by the Municipality of Ayia Napa and more specifically during the City Hall of the current Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Giannis Karousou for the creation of a private university unit which is expected to offers significant benefits to the city itself but also to the surrounding area.

Afterwards, the interested individuals are expected to proceed with all the required permits for the construction of the project, while according to the information, all the applications in the field of University certification have been submitted to the Ministry of Education.

According to Famagusta.News, the five-star private university will be named "American University of Cyprus" and will be built in the area of ​​the fields of Ayia Napa in an area of ​​about 40 thousand square meters and will offer higher education in four disciplines, of which the field of tourism studies and the hotel industry could not be absent, as well as options in a degree in Business Administration and Economics, Finance, Science and Engineering.

The plan for its operation concerns the attraction of one thousand students with the aim of bringing this number to four thousand, which will significantly contribute to the fight against seasonality in the businesses of Ayia Napa and the further creation and operation of housing units for students.

Mayor of Ayia Napa: "We feel justified"

In statements to Famagusta.News, the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zannetou, welcomed the Government's decision, stating that the Municipality feels justified because projects of vital importance for the region are being rolled out. The project, he said, which began four years ago, during the mayoralty of Giannis Karousou, has entered its implementation and expressed its gratitude to the Government for supporting the project and the creation of the first university unit in the province of Famagusta. Finally, he pointed out that this project will solve the chronic problem of seasonality as it will attract thousands of students as well as so many other relatives and friends to visit Ayia Napa throughout the year.
