No mobile phone was found after an investigation carried out yesterday in a cell of a detainee on the basis of a court warrant, the Director of the Central Prison, Anna Aristotelous, told KYPE, commenting on the arrest of a 37-year-old detainee as a suspect in connection with the recent .

The 37-year-old man, who was arrested last night in the Central Prison, was issued today by the Larnaca District Court with an eight-day detention order to facilitate the police investigations.

In her statements to KYPE, Ms. Aristotle said that "fixed telephony conversations are controlled by the relevant legislation", adding that the claim that communication could have taken place through the use of mobile phones, although we were not informed about it, can neither be confirmed nor ruled out. until the investigation of the matter is completed ".

He also stated that "yesterday, with a court order, a search was carried out in a prisoner's cell and no mobile phone was found".

He also said that "the Directorate of Prisons conducts regular and continuous checks in all areas of the Prisons and cells of detainees, and in case a mobile phone is found, strict disciplinary measures are taken immediately."

"However, these controls are not enough to deal with the problem effectively as we do not have the technological support to address this issue, although the phenomenon of mobile phone use has been significantly reduced with free daily access to telephone booths between the hours of 08:00 - 18:00 ", he added.

"For this reason, we requested and promoted the provision of a system for deactivation of mobile phones. A system that should be installed from September 2018 and for which several extensions were given by the Department of Electromechanical Services for its installation. "Although the system has been installed, it has not been activated as it has not been received until today by the Department of Electromechanical Services", he stated.

"As we have repeatedly pointed out for some time, without any means of technology in any prison in the world there can be a complete solution to the problem," concluded the Director of Prisons.
