The Police investigation, which has already begun, will prove whether what is mentioned in the Channel 4 video is true, Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zannetou told CNA, adding that our request is that these phenomena, if proven to exist, be suppressed.
He added that "the British Channel 4 video released on Tuesday essentially states that people working as staff in businesses are being exploited. This certainly does not represent the image of Ayia Napa as a whole, a destination that receives hundreds of thousands of tourists."
He added that "we have sent relevant letters, we have contacted the Chief of Police, the investigation of the matter has already begun, we await any results and certainly our request is for all of these to be dealt with. As for the issues that are the responsibility of the Municipality of Ayia Napa, the Municipality should take them up so that such issues do not arise."
At the same time, he continued, "we expect to be informed, since and since there is an issue, if of course it is proven, who these businessmen - professionals are who are making these hires and possibly doing everything mentioned in the video."
Responding to a relevant question, Mr. Zannetou said that "it must be made clear that young British people must know that after Brexit they are not entitled to be employed and work in Ayia Napa."
He also stated that "if this exploitation exists, it is an issue that will become clear through the video or through the evidence that the Police will collect. I do not want to judge or prejudge anything until the investigations are conducted and the final results are obtained."
In addition, the Mayor of Ayia Napa stated that "all those who travel specifically from Britain know whether they can work in our area or not. At the same time, the Ayia Napa professional also has a responsibility, since he employs these young people knowing that it is illegal and irregular to employ people from Britain."
