Mayor of Ayia Napa: Referred to Criminal Court - Free on 100 thousand euro bail

Today, the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zannettos, who last Sunday won re-election to the Municipality of Ayia Napa, was in the defendant's dock.

Today he was referred to a trial before the Criminal Court of Famagusta which sat in Paralimni and faces charges of obtaining money by false representations, forgery, as well as money laundering related to a case of securing €765.000 from European funds 12 years ago, which are related to the upgrading of his hotel of which he was a director and shareholder at the time in question.

He is accused in the case, as well as a company facing the same charges.

The case was set for July 12 before the Criminal Court where the defendants will be asked to answer whether or not they admit guilt.

The mayor of Ayia Napa was released on parole. Specifically, he will sign a guarantee of 100,000 euros, while the same amount must be signed by a worthy guarantor.

Regarding his stay in the position of Mayor of Ayia Napa, according to information, the Ministry of the Interior intends to request an opinion from the Attorney General in order to interpret the new Law on Municipalities that will come into effect on July 1 as to whether or not he should put Mr. Zannetou on holiday. In the event of a holiday of the Mayor's office, the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality with the most voters, namely the Deputy Mayor Sotiras, Antonis Koumis, will act.
