According to the Ayia Napa Municipality, the non-continuation of the licensing process for water sports in the Konnos marine area is primarily due to safety and health issues.
A statement from the Municipality refers to "press reports and postings on the NCDs concerning the licensing process for water sports in the Konnos marine area" and clarifies that "on May 28, 2024, the Municipality of Ayia Napa decided not to proceed with the promotion of the Competition with number 45/23 in relation to the coastal point "Konnos" (coastal point S21), in view of events and data concerning safety and health issues, which the Municipality decided to evaluate, in cooperation with competent government departments and services."
It is added that "the specific decision of the Municipality was duly notified to the only company that had submitted a bid in the tender."
On August 6, 2024, an appeal against this decision was filed with the Administrative Court, the trial of which is pending, is being completed.
Furthermore, "upon completion of the investigation regarding safety and health issues, the Municipality of Ayia Napa will discuss the issue again at a meeting of the Municipal Council, where decisions will be made, guided by ensuring the safety and health of beach users, protecting the environment and serving needs, and with respect for procedures and the institutional framework."
The main objective, concludes the Municipality's announcement, "remains the creation of conditions that ensure sustainable development, the safety of citizens and the smooth functioning of the coastal zone, and not the satisfaction of any interest of specific owners or their associations."
