An image from the past is coming back to life in the heart of Ayia Napa, offering residents and visitors a memorable, authentic journey into the past. A green telephone booth, fully restored, was recently placed in Ayia Napa’s Central Square “George Seferis”, following actions by the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, in collaboration with CYTA, constituting a special reference point that highlights the lifestyle of another era.
In years when telephones in homes were a rare occurrence, the telephone booth was for decades the main means of communication for the community as well as for the whole of Cyprus. From a common point in the village, it served the entire population, connecting Ayia Napa with the rest of Cyprus and abroad, initially via coins and later with the use of calling cards.
Today, the telephone booth returns not as a communication tool, but as a symbol of memory, history and collective experience. Its presence in public space awakens memories in the elderly and offers the younger generation the opportunity to experience the daily life and values of previous generations.

Its placement at the entrance to Seferi Square is part of the actions of the Municipality of Ayia Napa to highlight the cultural identity and historical memory of the city, as well as to upgrade the public space with elements that bridge the past with the present.
In a post on his personal Facebook account, the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, stated that the Municipality continues to systematically invest in promoting the roots and historical identity of Ayia Napa, creating spaces and reference points that narrate the course of the city through time. As he emphasized, the old telephone booth is a small but essential reminder of the everyday life of another era.
"With such interventions," he added, "we strengthen the cultural character of our historic center, honoring the past and enriching the image of modern Ayia Napa."
