The Famagusta Permanent Criminal Court today imposed a 7-year prison sentence on a 37-year-old man, who was found guilty, following a hearing, of one count of attempted rape, two counts of sexual abuse by penetration and one count of coercion into acts of a sexual nature.
The offenses were committed against a 33-year-old tourist on April 29, 2024 in Ayia Napa.
According to the facts of the case, the 37-year-old man and the 33-year-old woman arrived in Cyprus from a European Union country as friends and were staying in the same hotel room in Ayia Napa.
However, despite the 33-year-old making it clear that she did not consent to any sexual contact, the 37-year-old carried out acts of violence and sexual abuse against her, while attempting to rape her without succeeding, after the girl resisted.
The Criminal Court in its decision noted the persistence, rage and humiliating manner in which the 37-year-old treated the 33-year-old, completely ignoring her pleas, fear and pain.
He particularly emphasized the seriousness of sexual offenses, the increasing trend of committing similar offenses, as well as the fact that these are offenses of violence against women.
The Criminal Court imposed a 7-year prison sentence on the 37-year-old on charges of sexual abuse by penetration and 4 years on charges of attempted rape and coercion into acts of a sexual nature.
It is noted that the two penalties are concurrent.
