During its stay in Alexandroupolis, the delegation of the Municipality of Ayia Napa, led by the Mayor, Mr. Christos Zannetou, carried out a series of visits and contacts of particular historical, cultural and environmental interest.
During its visit to the city, the delegation visited the Alexandroupolis City Hall, where it was warmly welcomed by the Mayor, Mr. Yannis Zampoukis, Deputy Mayors, members of the City Council and officials of the Municipality. The meeting included an exchange of views on issues of local government, tourism development and cultural cooperation.
Subsequently, the delegation went to the town of Fera, where they were welcomed at the building of the Cultural Association of Fera by the Deputy Mayor Mr. Christos Yiagoulakis and the President and members of the Association. The members of the delegation were informed about the activities and history of the Association, while an exchange of souvenirs took place.
They then visited and were guided through the historic Byzantine church of Panagia Kosmosoteira, one of the most important religious and architectural monuments of Thrace.
The visit to the Evros Delta, one of the most important wetlands in Europe and a protected ecosystem of international importance, which hosts rare species of flora and fauna, was also particularly special. The members of the mission had the opportunity to get to know the unique natural environment of the region and to learn about the great ecological and geostrategic importance of Evros.
During the tour, reference was also made to the significant historical course of the region and in particular the Treaty of Lausanne of 1923, which definitively defined the borders of Greece and Turkey, shaping the modern geopolitical reality of the region.
