The issue of overcrowding of students with an immigrant background, which has been plaguing the management of the Ayia Napa "Antonis Tsokkos" Primary School for some time, as well as all the competent local bodies, and the ways to "decongest" the school, was the focus of discussion during the visit of the Parliament's Education Committee to the Ayia Napa "Antonis Tsokkos" Primary School, which took place last Friday (24/01).

The Chairman of the Parliament's Education Committee, Mr. Pavlos Mylonas, the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, the Members of Parliament - members of the committee, Mr. Giorgos Karoulas, Giannakis Gavriil, Prodromos Alampritis and Christos Senekkis, the Deputy Mayor of the Ayia Napa Municipal Council - Ayia Napa Municipality, Mr. Antonis Christou, the First Education Officer of Larnaca-Famagusta, Ms. Irini Hatzilouka - Mavri, the Inspector, Ms. Vaso Kouma, the Director of the school, Mr. Dimitris Kafouris and a delegation of teachers, the President of the School Board, Mr. Sergis Sergi, the President of the Parents' Association, Ms. Maria Kallikas and the members of the Association as well as the officers of the Technical Services of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth.

The meeting discussed the serious problems and conditions that are being created in the classrooms, despite the dedicated efforts made by the teachers, due to the fact that out of the 360 children attending the school, 200 are foreign speakers, while the parents are deeply concerned about the entire situation that has been created.

Finally, it was decided by the Committee to hold a second meeting on the issue and to include the participation of bodies that have a role in the issue.
