On June 20, 1964, Michalis and Avgi Georgiou opened a store that was to become a favorite landmark on a main street in Wagga, Australia. Michael's Delicatessen, at 236 Baylis Street, introduced the locals to a world of European delicacies.
In an interview with the Daily Advertiser in 2018, Michalis Georgiou recalled:
"I imported a lot of imported products in my store. Gradually the Australians got used to the food. We brought a lot of new food. "No one knew about the confectionery for the 'sex' and when they found out, the big supermarkets would come to the store to try it and put it on their shelves."
Even today, people still talk about their favorite memories of Michael's Delicatessen, with many still reminiscing about sandwiches, burgers and the strangest imported flavors, such as "pastitsi".
