The first stop on the last day of the King's Baton Relay route of the "Glasgow 2026" Commonwealth Games in Cyprus, on Saturday, May 23, was Ayia Napa, conveying messages of unity, friendship and cooperation that the Commonwealth Movement advocates.
At the Ayia Napa Municipal Hall, the baton was welcomed on behalf of the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, by the Deputy Mayor of the Ayia Napa Municipal District, Mr. Antonis Christou, receiving it from the former basketball player, Mr. Panagiotis Trisokkas.
Afterwards, the route continued to the International Sculpture Park, one of the most important cultural landmarks of the city, where the baton was received on behalf of the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, by the Deputy Mayor of the Sotiras Municipal District, Mr. Antonis Koumis, from the veteran footballer of the Paralimni Youth Association, Mr. Andreas Kittos.
Both in the courtyard of the Ayia Napa Municipal Hall and at the entrance to the International Sculpture Park, a symbolic touching of the Commonwealth Games flame took place by the President and Vice President of the Ayia Napa Youth Council, Mr. George Sergiou and Mr. Stamatis Kemitzis.
Subsequently, a cleaning campaign was carried out in the “Mavrokorona” area, highlighting the importance of environmental awareness and the protection of the natural environment. The action, which was honored with the presence of the President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, Mr. George Chrysostomou, was attended by executives of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, representatives of sponsoring companies, as well as volunteers from organized groups in Ayia Napa.
In their joint statement, Deputy Mayors Mr. Antonis Christou and Mr. Antonis Koumis expressed their warm thanks to the Cyprus Olympic Committee, the volunteers and all those who contributed to the successful organization of the reception of the King's Baton Relay in Ayia Napa, while assuring, on behalf of the Mayor Mr. Christos Zannetou, that the Municipality of Ayia Napa will continue to support actions that promote sports, volunteerism and social contribution, while wishing every success to the "Glasgow 2026" Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow.
