The Municipality of Ayia Napa, recognizing the importance of raising awareness and supporting people living with thalassemia, honored World Thalassemia Day, which has been established by the World Health Organization and the International Thalassemia Federation (ITF) and is celebrated every year on May 8.
As a sign of symbolism and support for our fellow citizens with thalassemia, the Municipality of Ayia Napa proceeded to illuminate the Municipal Museum "THALASSA" in red, which is an international symbol of voluntary blood donation - an element of vital importance for people with thalassemia.
The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, said in a statement that this day is not just a reminder, it is a voice of support, hope and recognition for all our fellow human beings living with thalassemia (Mediterranean Anemia), a hematological disease that requires regular blood transfusions for the survival and maintenance of the quality of life of patients. “For thalassemia patients, he noted, “blood is not a luxury – it is a necessity for life.”
"We as a society must show our solidarity with our fellow human beings with thalassemia in action. With this symbolic action, we send a message of life and contribution, reminding us of the importance of voluntary blood donation and continuous support for those in need."
He also stated that the Municipality of Ayia Napa remains committed to promoting social awareness actions and will continue to support initiatives that enhance human life and dignity.
