The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, met with marine biologists Dr. Albaro Israel from the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Center, Dr. Carlos Jimenez, Vasilis Andreou and Antonis Petrou, who form the research team appointed by the Mayor to investigate the problem of hairballs in the bay of Nissi Beach, in his office on Thursday, December 04. The Deputy Mayor of Ayia Napa Municipality, Mr. Antonis Christou, was also present at the meeting.
During the meeting, the researchers presented the first findings of their ongoing research, which focuses on identifying the main sources of pollution that favor the growth of the wool in the region. The research team pointed out that understanding the factors that contribute to the phenomenon is a key prerequisite for effectively addressing it.
As noted, the aim of the research is to definitively solve the problem of mud and maintain the high quality of bathing waters, which is a permanent priority for the Municipality of Ayia Napa.
In his statements after the meeting, the Mayor stated that "the protection of the marine environment and ensuring the quality of our waters is a fundamental priority for the Municipality."
“Our collaboration with specialized scientists and the systematic research that is underway,” he added, “are important steps towards finding a permanent solution.” “We will continue,” he said, “to support every scientific and environmental initiative that contributes to protecting our beaches and preserving the natural wealth of our region.”
