The presentation of the book "The Law of Rental in Cyprus", published by Hippasus Publications, was held with great success on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the packed Ayia Napa Cultural Center "George Seferis".
The event was organized by the writers Tonis Kyriakides, Chariklia Theodoulou, Charilaos Velaris, Stella Damianou, Euripides Hatzinestoros and Anastasios Anastasiou, in collaboration with the Larnaca Bar Association and the Famagusta Bar Association, and was held under the auspices of the Municipality of Ayia Napa.
In his greeting, the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, stated that it is a special pleasure and honor for the Municipality to support initiatives that promote legal knowledge and public debate.
Mr. Zannetou underlined the importance of renting in the everyday lives of citizens, especially in Ayia Napa, which is a predominantly tourist area, where there is a strong need for legal clarity and regulation.
At the same time, he congratulated the authors of the book for their scientific contribution and the choice to present their work under the auspices of the Municipality, at the "George Seferis" cultural center, and warmly thanked everyone who contributed to the event, the Larnaca and Famagusta bar associations, the official speaker Mr. Michalis Kyriakides, as well as the authors for their significant contribution.
Finally, he wished the authors continued success in their work, with the same dedication and scientific excellence that characterizes their book.
Greetings were also delivered by the President of the Famagusta Bar Association, Mr. Christos Karas, and the President of the Larnaca Bar Association, Mr. Dimitris Kallenos, who highlighted the importance of legal training on the crucial issue of renting out real estate in Cyprus.
The evening's keynote speaker was the distinguished lawyer Mr. Michalis Kyriakides, Partner at the law firm Harris Kyriakides, who emphasized the importance of the project in filling essential gaps in the legal literature.
As he mentioned, the book is not a product of ambition, but an attempt to provide a practical and documented answer to issues that have concerned lawyers, landlords and tenants for decades.
Mr. Kyriakides emphasized that the leasing of real estate in Cyprus is regulated by a complex network of legislation, centered on the Tenancy Law of 1983. He made particular reference to the Famagusta district, which, due to its particularity and the consequences of the Turkish invasion, had an active role in shaping the relevant case law.
As he noted, “it is better to spend one hour preparing an agreement properly than two years in court explaining what you thought was agreed.” In this context, he described the book as a useful and practical tool, offering clarity, interpretative approaches and instructions for the correct application of the law.
Mr. Kyriakidis warmly thanked Ms. Lefkia Kammitsi, President of the Nicosia Rent Control Court, for her introductory contribution, as well as the authors and contributors to the work. Finally, he referred to the upcoming proposal to amend the Tenancy Law of 1983, expressing interest in the legal consequences that this may entail.
Concluding his statement, he hoped that the book would serve as a reference point and starting point for greater legal clarity and effective dispute resolution, protecting both landlords and tenants in a balanced manner.
