The Municipality of Ayia Napa becomes the first Municipality in Cyprus to proceed with the installation of sensors for the Smart Parking system, within the framework of the implementation of the national Smart Cyprus project, which is coordinated by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy and concerns the implementation of common smart solutions throughout the Cypriot territory, marking another important step towards the digital transformation and upgrading of municipal services.

On Monday, March 9, 2026, vehicle detection sensors were installed on a trial basis by the company "MK TTS" at the "Melissi" parking lot in Ayia Napa. The sensors will record the occupancy of parking spaces in real time, providing immediate information to both citizens and municipal services on the availability of parking spaces.
Through the Smart Parking application, citizens will be able to be informed in real time about available parking spaces and be guided to them through a digital application. At the same time, the possibility of paying for parking, as well as possible fines, will be given through the same application, significantly facilitating the daily lives of citizens and visitors.

In his statements, the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, stated that this initiative is part of the Municipality's strategy for utilizing technology for the benefit of citizens.
"The Municipality of Ayia Napa," he noted, "continues to pioneer, adopting modern technological solutions that improve the daily lives of citizens and visitors."
"The Smart Parking application," he added, "will allow for better management of parking spaces and will provide drivers with immediate and easy information about available spaces."
The Municipality's goal is to gradually expand the system to all municipal parking lots. "We are planning to implement the system in all parking lots of the Municipality, in order to ensure more efficient parking management and better service to citizens," he said.
Mr. Zannetou also underlined that the Municipality of Ayia Napa will proceed with the implementation of the other key actions of the Smart Cyprus project. “In addition to Smart Parking, the Municipality will proceed with the implementation of Smart Lights and Smart Waste Management, fully utilizing the possibilities offered by the Smart Cyprus project for the creation of a modern, sustainable and “smart city”, he concluded.
The Smart Cyprus project aims at a modern, green and sustainable development model, which is expected to substantially improve the quality of life in all municipalities and communities of the country, through more efficient resource management and better service to citizens. The project is funded by the national Recovery and Resilience Plan, Cyprus of Tomorrow.
