MANAGEMENT OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES IN THE WORKPLACE
Free Seminar
Wednesday, October 30, 2019, Grecian Bay, Ayia Napa

Effective risk management in the workplace is a prerequisite for safeguarding the safety and health of workers. Workers in many workplaces in Europe are affected by exposure to hazardous substances. In recent decades, the use of certain substances, such as asbestos (which causes serious and in some cases fatal diseases) and vinyl chloride (which causes liver cancer), has been banned, restricted or regulated. However, hazardous substances remain a major safety and health issue in the workplace. According to European research, workers in the European Union are exposed to chemicals or chemicals for at least a quarter of their working time. Large companies often use over 1000 different chemicals such as paints, inks, adhesives and cleaners. Products usually consist of a mixture of chemicals. Even small businesses like car repair shops can use a similar number of chemicals.

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA), aiming at raising awareness of the risks posed by hazardous substances in the workplace and promoting a culture of risk prevention, is organizing a biennial (2018-2019 ) theme campaign "Safe and Healthy Workplaces, Hazardous Substances Management".

As part of the above campaign, the Department of Labor Inspection, as the National Focal Point of EU-OSHA in Cyprus, in collaboration with the CCCI, as a member of the Enterprise Europe Network, organize a free seminar to enhance workers' knowledge of the management of hazardous substances in the workplace, such as asbestos, as well as products containing hazardous chemicals, such as detergents, detergents, plant protection products, disinfectants , biocides, paints, solvents, maintenance of machinery and vehicles, liquid and gaseous fuels, etc.

Specifically, The seminar will focus on the management of asbestos works, the control of compliance with the provisions of the European CLP Regulation for the classification, labeling and packaging of chemicals and mixtures, the developments of the REACH Regulation regarding Safety Data Sheets and restrictions on the use of substances. Examples of good practice for risk prevention will be presented.

The seminar will take place on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at 10.00 a.m. at 13:30, at the Grecian Bay Hotel in Ayia Napa.
