The Municipality of Ayia Napa and, in particular, the Municipal District of Achna express their deep sadness over the death of the veteran football player, distinguished multi-sport athlete, Physical Education teacher and coach Panagiotis Pieris, who passed away at the age of 89.
Panagiotis Pieris served Cypriot sports with ethos, consistency and dedication. He was a member of the National Men's Football Team during the 1960s and played, among others, for Anorthosis and Pezoporikos, while he was among the pioneers in the establishment of the National Achna.
His athletic career was particularly multifaceted, as he also distinguished himself in track and field, basketball and volleyball. At the same time, through his capacity as a Physical Education teacher and coach, he contributed substantially to the education and athletic culture of younger generations, consistently serving the values of education, noble competition and sportsmanship.
His loss leaves an irreplaceable void in Cypriot sports and, in particular, in the sports family of Achna, with which he was inextricably linked to his name and his many years of contribution.
As a minimal sign of honor and recognition of his significant contribution, the Municipality of Ayia Napa will cover all of his funeral expenses.
The funeral service will be held at the Church of Agia Marina and Archangel Michael, in Dasaki Achna, on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 3:00 p.m.
The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, the Deputy Mayors of the Municipal Districts of Achna, Mr. Nikos Vasilas, Ayia Napa, Mr. Antonis Christou, Sotira, Mr. Antonis Koumis, Liopetriou, Mr. Markos Koumis and Avgorou, Mr. Panagis Michaelas, the Members of the Municipal Council and the staff of the Ayia Napa Municipality extend their sincere and warm condolences to his family and loved ones.
