A forest fire in the Sotiras Forest was brought under full control, which broke out shortly after 6 yesterday afternoon.
A written announcement of the Forest Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment states that "the fire that broke out yesterday, Tuesday 25 May 2021 at 18:07 in the Sotiras Forest, between the Municipalities of Ayia Napa and Sotiras, was brought under full control two hours later , that is, at 8 in the evening ".
It added that "the fire burned an area of 1,5 hectares of State Forest covered with pines, invisible, wild olive trees and low wild vegetation and three hectares of private land covered with low vegetation."
The firefighting operation involved 13 people from the Forest Department with three fire trucks, 12 people from the Fire Service with four fire trucks, a fire truck from the Municipality of Ayia Napa and one from the Municipality of Sotiras, an excavator and residents of the area.
According to the announcement, "both leased planes assisted in the firefighting effort. "Forces remain in the area to secure the perimeter of the fire and to deal with a possible resurgence."
The causes of the fire are being investigated.
