The Mayor of Paralimni - Derynia, Mr. Giorgos Nikolettos, attended the event to upgrade the column of the monument to the hero Dimitrakis Christodoulou in Derynia on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
The event was held in the presence of the President of the House of Representatives and President of the Democratic Rally, Mrs. Annita Dimitriou, representatives of the state, the local government and the hero's family. It was organized by the National Association of Deryneia "Dimitrakis Christodoulou" and was held on the occasion of the kind donation of a bronze sculptural composition with a helmet and a laurel wreath by the sculptor Philippos Giapanis, which now adorn the column.
In his greeting, the Mayor of Paralimni - Deryneia, Mr. George Nikolettos, stated that the hero Dimitrakis Christodoulou, with his sacrifice, honored the national ideal and the homeland. He emphasized that his bust, which has stood in Deryneia since 1966, is an unquenchable flame of memory and honor. He emphasized that the presence of the President of the Parliament and the Democratic Rally, Ms. Annita Dimitriou, as well as the representatives of the state, the local government and the people, proves that the memory of the heroes is not a matter of the past, but a foundation of national identity.
He finally assured that the Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia is committed to continuing the promotion, preservation and transmission of the legacy of the heroes, because, as he said characteristically, the figure of Dimitrakis Christodoulou, like every hero of this place, is a compass for the future, a symbol of self-denial, patriotism and youthful ideal.
