In order to bring the two Communities of Cyprus closer through culture, the construction of an outdoor summer cinema within the dead zone in Deryneia began about two weeks ago.
The creation of the cinema is promoted by the Municipality of Deryneia in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Cyprus, the Point Center for Contemporary Art, the United Nations and the international Italian artist Rosa Barba.
As the Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, stated to KYPE, “the Municipality has always raised the issue of the use of the dead zone for both residential and cultural purposes. Last year, the Italian artist Rosa Barba won the first prize in an international competition for works made in remote and isolated areas, sponsored by the Italian Council of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism.
He added that "Rosa Barba is a well-known artist abroad, with a presence and solo exhibitions in many important museums around the world", he said and noted that the artist has expressed strong interest in exploring the wider area of the dead zone and other archaeological sites. of Cyprus and "her work that won the international competition concerns the creation of an open-air summer cinema in the dead zone in Deryneia".
He added that "the project was proposed through the Italian state at the country's embassy in Cyprus. About two weeks ago, the Municipality of Deryneia started the project and Rosa Barpa came seven days ago and after inspecting the projects that are being done, then she returned to Germany where she is active ".
The Municipality of Deryneia, continued Mr. Karagiannis, "is constantly in contact with the artist, who is concerned about the progress of the project, while at the same time looking forward to its completion, since this is the first work carried out in the dead zone culture. After its completion, the open-air cinema will remain in the Municipality of Deryneia and will be able to be used for various cultural and bi-communal programs, since its goal is to bring the two Communities of Cyprus closer ".
