The need to use Renewable Energy Sources and the reduction of the use of coal and fossil fuels was pointed out by the Mayor of Deryneia and member of the European Committee of the Regions (EETP) Andros Karagiannis.

A statement from the Municipality of Deryneia states that in his speech at the Commission meeting held in Brussels on Tuesday on the "effects of the war in Ukraine on climate and energy policies", Andros Karagiannis stated that "wars do not they help reduce environmental damage, but instead aggravate the climate and pollute natural resources and air. " He added that "the countries' ongoing military equipment significantly reduces environmental spending and the promotion of environmentally friendly actions by local and regional authorities."

Local authorities, he said, "are responsible for consolidating environmental awareness in citizens, which is promoted through recycling, composting, the use of photovoltaic systems and energy-saving lamps"

As the Mayor of Deryneia said, "the gradual increase of the temperature and the extreme weather phenomena, force us to waste more electricity, especially on hot summer days, while he pointed out the need to support the vulnerable groups of the population, which do not have the financial means to they warm their households in winter but also do not use an air conditioner on hot summer days, as they are unable to pay their electricity bills ".

That is why, he concluded, "the support of households by the central states and the European Union for the avoidance of energy poverty and social inequalities is imperative."
