The Mayor of Paralimni - Deryneia, Mr. Giorgos Nikolettos, along with members of the Municipal Council, attended the unveiling event of the sign for Kato Deryneia on Sunday, March 16.
The event was organized by the “Adouloti Kato Deryneia” Association and had a symbolic character, since the members of the Association, with the permission of the Municipality, placed a signpost to Kato Deryneia on Famagusta Street.
During his greeting, Mr. Nicolettos emphasized the importance of the initiative, pointing out that it is not simply a reminder of the duty to preserve memory and the desire for return, but also a symbol of the obligation to continue the struggle by all possible means.
He underlined that the Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia remains, in large part, occupied, while he referred to the suffocating cordon of the Turkish occupation, which for 51 years has been violating the rights of citizens, keeping refugees in their own homeland. He made special mention of the open wounds of 1974, emphasizing that no force can erase the injustices and crimes that were committed.
Referring to Kato Deryneia, he pointed out that, like the entire province, it bears indelible signs of the invasion, while the opening of the roadblock has not changed the image of the occupation, with refugee homes remaining behind barbed wire.
Finally, he reaffirmed the Municipality's commitment to preserving historical memory and to demanding a solution that will ensure the rights of refugees, stating that the struggle for a free and reunited Cyprus continues unabated.
