The newspaper "Phileleftheros" publishes a report on the challenges of the occupying army along the entire line of opposition today on the occasion of the recent incident in Strovilia. According to the report, machine guns are being fired at the Deryneia roadblock.

Strovilia was only the beginning, the most poignant step of a wider Turkish plan with clear goals, the deconstruction of the role of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force as it is today and the upgrading of the occupation regime to an equal partner of the Republic of Cyprus. The horizon for the implementation of the Turkish steps, which are steadily escalating under the pretext of the impasse in the Cyprus issue, is the summer.

A key role in the implementation of Turkish plans in the occupied territories is played by the so-called Foreign Minister Kudret Ozersay, the first to publicly raise the issue of changing the status of UNFICYP, arguing that the role assigned to it in 1963 has disappeared. Head of the diplomatic missions accredited in our country, emphasizing that they do not recognize the Republic of Cyprus. He asks the foreign ambassadors to have direct contact with him regarding issues related to the Turkish Cypriot community.

As for the steps taken on the ground, apart from Strovilia, from where the occupying forces did not move, they try to create accomplishments along the entire length of the front line, with the most obvious:

  • The promotion of a watchtower and new places in the area of Astromeritis.
  • The setting up of machine guns in the area of Deryneia.
  • Systematic violations of the status quo in Pyla with the presence of military officials of the occupying army and so-called police officers, despite the fact that such a thing is not allowed.

Government spokesman Prodromos Prodromou, although sparing in his statements on the subject, said in an intervention on Antenna's noon show that members of the Peacekeeping Force were receiving threats from the occupying troops. He remained in the position that exhaustive actions are being taken and that they are in consultation with UNFICYP. The spokesman spoke of an attempt to create instability related to the action of the Peacekeeping Force.

Well-informed sources note that the Turks are slowly unfolding Plan B, which aims to create accomplishments as they expect that in the summer there will be a change in the status of the Peacekeeping Force, something that was avoided during the last renewal of its term.

The president of DISY Averof Neophytou, from the noon show of the state channel, underlined that what is happening today in Strovilia is a rehearsal of the occupying forces in case the Peacekeeping Force leaves Cyprus.

AKEL Politburo member Christos Christofidis, in his speech to Antenna, spoke about the danger of creating dozens of Swirls along the line of confrontation in case the new challenges of the occupying army are not met, noting that representations to the Member States are not enough. of the Security Council.

The Citizens' Alliance calls on the Government to take strong steps towards the United Nations and the President of the Republic to report the events to international and European bodies. The occupying authorities, the Alliance reports, are once again acting illegally and provocatively in Strovilia. These events follow a series of other illegal and provocative actions by Turkey in the Cypriot EEZ and take place only a few days before the Anastasiadis-Akinci meeting.

ELAM states that the actions of the occupying forces do not just cause "tension", as described by UNFICYP, but extend the occupation. ELAM calls on the Government to stop the negotiations and to denounce in all international forums, including the European Union and the UN, the aggressive actions of Turkey and the occupying forces.
