The Democratic Party shoots the mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, on the occasion of his action to ask the UN to intervene in the reform of the Local Government.

In a statement issued by DIKO, it states that it is "unthinkable, unacceptable and hostile to the coordinated institutions of the Republic of Cyprus, the letter of the Mayor of Deryneia to the head of UNFICYP, Elizabeth Spehar, in which, in essence, the sovereign right of the Republic of Cyprus to deal with its internal affairs, in accordance with the Constitution, the laws and the legal procedures of the Cypriot state ".

He also notes that "it is the right of the Mayor to disagree with the proposal for the reform of Local Government that concerns Deryneia, but the Mayor or anyone else has no right to call third parties to intervene so as not to affect his municipality."

He also states that "the reform of Local Government is a matter for the government, the Parliament and other stakeholders, such as the Union of Municipalities and no one else."

We understand, the announcement continues that "the Mayor of Deryneia wants to remain undisturbed, in order to play an alleged role in the contact between the two communities. It can do this through other bodies and not through the Local Government, which is nobody's business ".

Concluding the party, he points out that "regardless of its position on the government proposal for local government reform, which will be submitted during the debate in Parliament, the Democratic Party considers the letter of the Mayor of Deryneia as unacceptable."
