The problems of the residents of Strovilia were raised by the Minister of Interior, Nikos Nouris, from whom he asked for help, for their solution, the Mayor of Deryneia.

In a letter to the Minister, Andros Karagiannis refers to the issue of the needs and problems of the inhabitants of the area of Strovilia - Deryneia and the last meetings that took place in the remote area of Strovilia with the few remaining residents.

As Mr. Karagiannis explains, one of the major problems faced by the inhabitants of Strovilia is "the worrying increase of rodents in the area, due both to the increase in temperature, but mainly to the operation of an illegal landfill in occupied Famagusta, which is adjacent to northwestern area of Strovilia. Regarding this issue ", adds the Mayor of Deryneia, he addressed" the Directorate of the British Bases of Dhekelia and for a certain period of time the illegal dumping of garbage stopped ".

Unfortunately, he notes "from February 9, 2021, the dumping of garbage continues, resulting in an increase in the number of rodents, which come from the occupied areas and the Dead Zone."

Another problem is “cleanliness issues that continue to exist, mainly due to wild vegetation, abandoned houses, orchards and the uncontrolled dumping of rubbish. As a local authority, we are unable to carry out daily cleaning, due to the distance of Strovilia from the free area of the remote Municipality of Deryneia, but also the lack of staff ".

He also notes that for this issue, the Municipality has submitted "to the administration of the British Bases, which responded, however, there is still room for improvement."

Regarding the road network, the Mayor states in his letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that "a constant request of our citizens in Strovilia is the registration, widening and improvement of rural roads, but also the poor road network in general, which makes it difficult for them to easily access their homes and properties. We believe that the improvement and asphalting of the road network will revitalize the area and will facilitate the movement of residents and farmers ".

It also states that "a request is pending from the residents of the northwestern area of Strovilia for the registration of the road network adjacent to the old road, which was used before 1974 and which is now used by the British Bases for patrols in the area".

In the letter to Nikos Nouris, the Mayor of Deryneia refers to the issues of water supply and electricity in the area of Strovilia, noting that "most of the residents of the area are elderly, retired and farmers and ask for discounts on water supply fees, since they are low recipients . "Due to the isolation of the area, the few inhabitants of Strovilia are forced to close their homes at sunset."

He adds that "fear and suspicion force residents to keep the lights on for their own protection and safety, charging them with further costs." Their request, he added, is to study ways to grant special discounts or to provide them with economical and environmentally friendly light bulbs, to save energy and resources.

Regarding the issue of telecommunications, it is stated that "the reception of mobile telephony or internet usage signal is either low or non-existent. In a communication we had with mobile network providers, they assured us that the poor reception is due to the proximity of the area with mobile phone antennas of other providers, which create interference ".

Mr. Karagiannis addresses a "warm request" to the Minister of Interior to ensure "the restoration of the problem in order to avoid unpleasant incidents in case of emergency."

In the letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Mayor of Deryneia also refers to the improvement of the church of Agios Nikolaos, noting that "the residents of the area are responsible for the operation and cleanliness of the church, which presents serious problems of cracks". They have appealed to the British Bases for repair without response, he states and adds that "the church needs immediate repair and for this we should all contribute, maintaining the Christian element in the area, ensuring the immediate maintenance of the church to which the name owes the area".

The Mayor of Deryneia also adds that the problems faced by the residents of Strovilia are "small but important, which make it difficult for them to live and their normal daily life".

At the same time, he appeals to the Minister of Interior, on behalf of all the residents of Strovilia, to support and contribute "in any possible way to the solution of the problems they face", noting that his own intervention and contribution, as well as that of the Local Authority, is burdensome. important for the maintenance and upgrading of the area ".
