The Confidence Building Measures, as he said, and the opening of roadblocks must serve the purpose for which they exist, referring nevertheless to the illegal opening of the beach in Agios Memnon by the occupying authorities, raising the question of whether the local authorities are exploited by MOEs.

He said that the Government is expected to take strong steps for the moves of the occupying authorities, while noting that the opening of the occupied and enclosed area of Famagusta should not be a simple Confidence Building Measure.
The response from AKEL of the Municipality of Famagusta was also immediate, which through its announcement yesterday criticized Galanos' statements both on Sigma TV and in the announcement issued last Thursday.
AKEL clarified that it is unequivocally in favor of the opening of the Deryneia roadblock, separating its position and criticizing the concerns expressed by Alexis Galanos.
The Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, also spoke and stated that the opening of the Deryneia roadblock is planned for 1η July and that on July 9 the Municipality will proceed with the inauguration of a bi-communal center near the roadblock that will promote peace and reconciliation between the peoples.
This is the announcement of the Municipal Group of AKEL Left New Forces in the Municipality of Famagusta on the issue of opening the roadblock of Deryneia:
After the public statements of the Mayor of Famagusta Mr. Alexis Galanos but also the promotion that the whole issue of the opening of the roadblock of Deryneia happened, we consider it our obligation to take a public position so that some things can be clarified.
It is to our great surprise that we heard yesterday and today the Mayor of Famagusta declares that he wants to convey to the President of the Republic the concern "whether the opening of the Deryneia roadblock should be postponed", and the reason we were surprised is why the Municipal Council never did not make such a decision.
In addition, the Mayor invokes moves aimed at colonizing the city, as if the city has not been colonized in other parts of the city for 44 years. Any unilateral actions that create new accomplishments on the ground are clearly condemnable. Nevertheless, the statements of the Mayor today, about the impending settlement of the fenced part of Famagusta, spread fear among the refugee world and in fact foster a climate of rejection, which is completely harmful in view of any new attempt to resume the settlements.
The announcement issued last Thursday, June 21, 2018 by the Municipality of Famagusta is a product of an effort to reconcile different views, which actually exist within the Municipal Council. We consciously avoided the vote and consciously agreed to issue this announcement, despite the fact that it did not fully express our positions. We compromised with this announcement with the sole purpose of serving the Mayor's effort not to give an image of discord within the Municipal Council.
Nevertheless, we are watching the Mayor parade by the media and instead of defending the announcement issued by the Municipality of Famagusta, to express his personal views, in favor of postponing the opening of the roadblock and even to present them in a way that gives the impression that this view is also majority in the Municipal Council. We categorically state that the Municipal Council has never taken a decision in favor of postponing the opening of the Deryneia roadblock.
At the same time, we want to clarify that in the plenary session of the Municipal Council in which this issue was discussed, the Municipal Group of AKEL, had placed in a clear and unequivocal FOR the opening of the roadblock, based on the time position of the e / k side which has always been in favor of opening more roadblocks, considering that this serves the effort for rapprochement, reconciliation and cooperation of the two communities, but also the improvement of the conditions for finding a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
Clearly, we do not consider that the opening of any roadblock can be the solution to the problem. But we reiterate that our goal remains a united homeland, without barbed wire, without roadblocks and without any dividing line. Therefore, the Municipal Team of AKEL in the Municipality of Famagusta separates its position from the Mayor stating that every crack in the dividing lines leads us closer to the solution and the contact with the T / C community creates conditions that will help in resolving the Cyprus problem. .
In addition, we believe that the Mayor must realize that he must properly administer our refugee Municipality and tear down the bridges of separation, away from micropolitical expediencies and any subjectivities.
Finally, we convey to everyone the message that the Municipal Team of AKEL in the Municipality of Famagusta will no longer be exposed in the name of a sham unanimity.
