The Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, requests the contribution of the President of the Republic for the construction of the Famagusta Olympic Swimming Pool in a letter.

In his letter to the President of the Republic, the Mayor refers to the letter of Nikos Anastasiadis to the Municipality of Deryneia, dated 28 November 2019 and their last meeting at the Offices of the Cyprus Sports Organization on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, reiterating "our constant request for construction of the Famagusta Olympic Swimming Pool and promotion of the project, which the civil society of the province of Famagusta lacks ".

He adds that "the acritic Municipality of Deryneia normally pays the annual rent of 500 euros from 2012 regarding the Lease Agreement. "Unfortunately, the Municipality does not have the revenue to cover the amount of 300 thousand euros for the study of the project, due to the loss of 75% of the land and its entire coastal front, 2,5 km long, from the Turkish invasion and occupation".

Mr. Karagiannis also states that "because the project is regional and will not belong to the local authority of Deryneia" he appeals to the President of the Republic to consider "ways to cover the cost of studying the project, something that will satisfy the citizens of the" wounded " from the Turkish invasion and occupation, but also from the pandemic of the coronavirus, in the province of Famagusta ".

The letter also notes that "as a critical and semi-occupied Municipality, we are fighting our own battle for the stay of our citizens next to the barbed wire and the occupying army. The problems of everyday life arising from the presence of the Turkish army, our activity within the dead zone and the cooperation with the United Nations, but also the provision of humane living conditions in the Daryneia Turbines, within the British Dekelia Bases, leave us no room for growth. but also to raise financial resources for the promotion of large-scale projects, without your own financial contribution ".

The province of Famagusta, underlines in the letter to President Anastasiadis "as the only province that lacks this valuable project, is entitled to acquire its own Olympic Swimming Pool, which we believe will strengthen the local economy, entrepreneurship and contribute to promoting sport, culture, tourism and healthy recreation, young and old in general ".

The Mayor of Deryneia also states that "recognizing the appreciation for the province of Famagusta" nurtured by the President of the Republic, he expresses the hope that he will take the request very seriously and will take care "that this injustice is removed for our citizens and they soon acquire the their own regional swimming pool, of European Olympic standards ".
