A public consultation was held on September 22, 2026, at the Paralimni - Deryneia Municipal Hall, on the proposed amendment to the Paralimni Marine Protected Area Decree, as well as the proposal to designate a fishing prohibition area within the "Islands Marine Area" Special Conservation Zone.
Representatives of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, organized groups and professional bodies participated in the consultation, with the aim of exchanging views, recording concerns and submitting suggestions from the local community.
The Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia recognizes the great ecological value of the marine area, which hosts important habitats, such as Posidonia areas, reefs and shallow sandbars, which contribute to the preservation of marine biodiversity and fish populations.
At the same time, the need for any new regulations to take into account the real conditions and needs of people active at sea, such as professional and amateur fishermen, divers, boat owners and other users of the coastal zone, was underlined.
For the Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia, the protection of the marine environment and sustainable development can and must go hand in hand. The sea is an integral part of the natural heritage, the economy, the tourist identity and the everyday life of our region.
Through dialogue, scientific documentation and the participation of the local community, the goal is to formulate solutions that will effectively protect our marine wealth, while at the same time respecting the needs and particularities of our place.
The Municipality thanks the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, as well as all the bodies and participants for their presence and contribution to the public consultation.
