Doros Takkas on FN: "Optimism but also concerns for tourism"

The tourism agents are now looking at the new tourist season of 2022 with optimism but also with concern, since as things show, we will return to normal rhythms slowly, but without overcoming the reefs of our dependence on traditional markets and seasonality.

In his statements to Famagusta.News The President of PASYXE Famagusta, Doros Takkas, stated that this year approached levels of occupancy 65-70%, while in terms of income, tourism operators moved to about 50% compared to 2019.

The lessons…

In fact, as he mentioned, this season has taught a lot to the factors of tourism as it highlighted the problem of seasonality as well as the problem of dependence on the two major markets, Russia and Great Britain, something that this year emerged to a large extent after the British market honored ”with her presence after September 15. With these data, as he mentioned, the lesson is that our country should finally start to become independent from these two big markets.

On the other hand, the positive thing, as he said, is that during this year our country was visited by markets that are not considered traditional, such as countries of Central Europe and the former Eastern bloc as well as the Arab world, something that as Mr. Takkas mentioned shows that with the right air connections and reasonable prices our country can win a third big market or even independence from Russia and Great Britain.

The new tourist season

The President of PASYXE Famagusta pointed out that the new year is coming with optimism, but on the other hand there are several concerns due to the situation that is not clear, regarding the consequences of Brexit and what will happen with the organized flights from Russia.

As for the winter season, he said that until mid-November most hotels will remain open, while those that will remain open during the winter season will serve mainly domestic tourism or sports tourism for football team preparations, so the winter is not expected to is particularly satisfactory.

However, as he stressed, the hope is not lost as the winter season should be dedicated to the preparations and processes with those responsible for planning the next season, since as he said, the hope is that 2022 will be better than 2021.
