The 32-year-old Greek Cypriot from the Nicosia province, who had been arrested earlier today, was released on Thursday afternoon by the police of the British Dhekelia Bases, after he had stated that he accidentally crossed into the occupied territories with his car in the Strovilion area.

According to his claim, as soon as he noticed lights coming from a Turkish outpost, he ran and crossed into the free areas, the territory of the British Dhekelia Bases, leaving his vehicle behind.

The Dhekelia Border Police reported that the man was arrested in order to provide sufficient explanations for the exact reasons why he was in the specific area, since there was suspicion that he might be involved in a drug case and was trying to return to the free areas from an uncontrolled point.

However, according to the Bases Police, there was no further evidence in the case, which is why the arrest of the 32-year-old was deemed necessary.

Finally, early in the afternoon and after being questioned, the 32-year-old was released after the Base Police did not find any evidence against him.

The man was released after paying a bail of one thousand euros and will report back to the Dhekelia Police Station in two weeks.

It is recalled that according to the 32-year-old's claim, at around 4 a.m. he accidentally entered the occupied territory with his car on the road leading to Strovilia. In his statement to the Base Police, he stated that he was driving on the Larnaca - Famagusta road, when at some point, he entered a dirt road and got out of his vehicle for a few minutes.

However, at some point, according to his testimony, he saw lights falling on him, so he realized that he had accidentally entered - as he said - occupied territory.

The 32-year-old also reported to the Dhekelia Base Police that as soon as he realized that the lights were coming from an occupied outpost, he became scared and ran in the opposite direction, which was the Base area, leaving his car behind.

It is noted that according to the man's testimony, Turkish soldiers surrounded his car.
