OP. AMM/STOU: €20.000 fine to a contracting company - Employee fell from a height of 10,90 meters

A fine of €20.000 was imposed by the District Court of Famagusta on a contracting company, as a result of a criminal prosecution by the Department of Labor Inspection of the Ministry of Labor and Social Insurance, for violations of the provisions of the legislation on safety and health at work.

An employee of the company, during the work, fell from a height of approximately 10,90 meters and was seriously injured. According to the court's decision, the company failed to install solid railings at the floor ends of a floor of sufficient height, at least 1,10 meters from the floor, that have a shield or other barrier at floor level, at least 0,15 meters high, a handrail and horizontal element so that the distance between a chest or other obstacle and a handrail or other horizontal element does not exceed 0,45 meters or use other equivalent means to prevent persons from falling from a height, resulting in the fall of the worker.

In addition, the company failed to immediately inform the Famagusta Provincial Labor Inspection Office in the fastest and most practical way about an accident that happened to one of its employees, which made him unable to perform his work, for more than three calendar days, excluding day of the accident.

For the same case, the Court also sentenced an involved person to a fine of €2.000 and a prison sentence of eight months with a three-year suspension for failure to install solid railings at the ends of the floor of a floor with sufficient height and failure to inform, immediately in the most expeditious and practical way of the District Office Famagusta Labor Inspection regarding an accident that happened to an employee.
