No renewal of the yellow warning for severe weather phenomena, which expired this morning, is foreseen, the Senior Officer of the Meteorology Department, Michalis Mouskos, told KYPE, referring to "limited problems" and "beneficial rainfall" that occurred in the previous twenty-four hours.
For her part, the Officer of the Press and Public Relations Office of the Fire Service, Koulla Mesaritou, told KYPE that this morning the province of Famagusta received around 30 calls for pumping water from flooded properties, opening culverts and towing stationary vehicles.
Speaking to KYPE, the Senior Officer of the Department of Meteorology, Michalis Mouskos, said that there is no plan to renew the yellow warning, adding that the system that affected Cyprus has now weakened enough and does not fall under the level of a warning.
However, he clarified that "there remain in our area some phenomena of isolated rain or some isolated storm for this afternoon, mainly in the mountains and inland, without excluding some other areas, while tonight in the north and on the eastern coast it is quite possible to have some phenomena of rain or storm".
He then said that the temperature today is expected to rise to around 18 degrees both inland and along the coast, which is around 2°C below average.
Speaking about the weather conditions that will prevail on Thursday, Mr. Muskos said that some isolated rains are expected mainly in the mountains, adding that "the possibility of a storm is missing". The temperature will rise to 19°C, he added.
Regarding the temperatures for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Mr. Muskos said a temperature rise of 3-4°C is expected inland, exceeding average values for the season, which are close to 19-20°C.
Sunday is the only day when it is likely that there will be some rain in the western regions of Cyprus during the day and night, Michalis Mouskos told KYPE, clarifying that the situation that will prevail on Sunday has not been completely clarified.
Taking stock of the system that passed through Cyprus, he said that "it was what we expected", adding that "it did not affect us to any degree to the extent that it affected Greece, where unfortunately we also had deaths and many disasters, many extreme phenomena both in total precipitation and in very strong and even stormy winds".
In Cyprus, continued Mr. Musk, there have been some strong storms and some lingering rain, while hail has been reported on 2-3 occasions, as well as road flooding issues. The problems were limited, he added.
However, this system "was quite beneficial" from yesterday morning to this morning, he said, calling it "very beneficial rains". “We haven't recorded from all the stations yet. the total rainfall", he added, while expressing the assessment that the rainfall has covered "a fairly respectable percentage" of December.
"We avoided the worst. The system was not supposed to be as strong as in Greece and indeed it was not", he concluded.
The Fire Service's Press and Public Relations Officer, Koulla Mesaritou, told KYPE that this morning the province of Famagusta received around 30 calls for pumping water from flooded buildings, opening culverts and towing immobilized vehicles, focusing on the Paralimni area as for the most part.
Ms. Mesaritou added that "we had a partial recall of personnel, who are working with 4 Fire Brigade crews and we are supported by a Civil Defense crew until all calls are processed." As he said, "there have been no particularly serious problems regarding danger or injury to any of our fellow citizens. We will continue until all the calls are completed," he said.
Responding to a question from the KYPE regarding an elevator incident at the Paphos General Hospital, Ms. Mesaritou reported that the Fire Department responded to the call. "Because the call was made during the heavy rain, it was thought by some that the elevator had a problem due to the phenomenon, but it was found that the problem was purely technical and not due to the rain," he explained.
As far as the operation of the road network is concerned, there were some problems only in the free province of Famagusta, a Police representative told KYPE.
