El. Famagusta remains the only area in Cyprus that does not have approved points for dumping massive waste. There are many places that have been turned into garbage dumps out of necessity for the residents.
Although the requests of the local authorities are continuous showing that the solution to the problem is an urgent need, they did not find a response and the residents have not seen any projects.
In a conversation that had FamagustaNews to Environmental Protection Commissioner Clelia Vassiliou, was informed that there is planning for the creation of 3 green points in the Municipality of Deryneia, in the Municipality of Sotira and in the Community of Avgorou.
However, this is something we already knew but did not see implemented. According to the Environment Commissioner, there is a delay in the implementation of the green signs and this is due to the studies that must precede the impact on the environment.
The implementation
The creation of green dots will be done in two phases.
The first phase concerns the Community of Avgorou, where the environmental impact study and the tender documents were completed.
The second phase concerns the Municipality of Deryneia and the Municipality of Sotiras where the Community Councils hired a private designer in order to expedite the process for the environmental impact study and for the tender documents for the implementation.
The situation
There are many points in El. Famagusta, which were turned into garbage dumps. The image and the smell are disgusting. Residents are protesting the situation as it is uncontrollable and it is not uncommon for fires to break out in these areas.
Note that these are residential areas where the effects on health have an impact on residents.
