E. Famagusta: He honored the struggles and fighters of the Greek Freedom

The Municipality of Ayia Napa honored the struggles and fighters of the Greek Freedom in an event it organized together with the Municipality of Sotiras and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

An exceptional anniversary event was organized on the evening of Thursday, March 28 at the Ayia Napa Cultural Center "Giorgos Seferis" by the Municipalities of Ayia Napa and Sotiras and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in which the struggles and fighters of the Hellenic Freedom were honored.

In his greeting, Mayor Sotiras, speaking on behalf of the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannettos, who is absent abroad, stated "that despite the hardships, trials and storms that Hellenism has gone through and is going through like Homer's Ulysses, which try our endurance and unity, only the immortal figures of '21 and the heroic fighters of 55-59 can teach us that only unity can save us from the present difficulties that our country is going through".

"Our duty," he added, "is to look at today's enemy with contempt, to reflect on the strength of our Greek soul and to hold high the banners of resistance against today's ruthless conquerors who plunder our Greekness and ethos."

Greetings were also addressed at the event by the President of the Council of Historical Memory of the EOKA (S.I.M.A.E.) Mr. Andreas Maimaridis and the Professor, Member of the Board of Administration of the E.K.P.A. and President of the University Committee of Athens for Cyprus Mr. Achilleus Chaldaiakis.

Then the Four-part Mixed Choir of the Department of Music Studies of the Philosophical School of EKPA under the direction of Mr. Nikolaos Maliaras and accompanied on the piano by Mr. Marios Ioannou presented a program of racing songs that moved and drew the warm applause from the audience.

At the end of the event, the Mayor of Sotiras, Mr. Giorgos Ttakkas, and the Deputy Mayor of Agia Napa, Mr. Antonis Christou, presented commemorative plaques and gifts to Andreas Voskos, Andreas Maimaridis, Achilleus Chaldaiakis, Nikolaos Maliara, Mario Ioannou and the Tetraphonic Mixed Choir. Commemorative gifts were offered to the two Municipalities and by the University.

The program of the event was edited and presented by the Cultural Officer of the Municipality of Agia Napa Ms. Maria Tofini Tsantila.
