The Chairman of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament, Andreas Kafkalias, addressed an appeal to the government to proceed immediately with compensations to the potato growers who have been affected by the extreme weather phenomena of the last days.

Mr. Kafkalias spoke after a tour carried out at noon by a delegation of the Commission, consisting of MPs George Georgiou and Nikos Kettiros, in potato crops in Xylofagou, Ormidia and Liopetri.

The tour was also attended by AKEL Famagusta MP Skevi Koukoumas, EKA Famagusta District Secretary Giannakis Gabriel and AKEL Famagusta District Secretary Chrysanthos Zannettos.

In his statements, Mr. Kafkalias stated that "we really see the huge damage that the producers have suffered in their crops. The executive branch is called upon, the government to act immediately and immediately this time and to proceed with the process of compensating the victims ".

After stating that "the government carries a heavy history", Mr. Kafkalias recalled "the disasters that hit farmers last June and the special decisions of the Council of Ministers for immediate payment of compensation. A period of 7-8 months has passed and the producers are still waiting for the compensations ".

This time, he continued, "we call on the government to take decisions that will compensate the producers really immediately because they cannot stand it. "We have also contacted the Agricultural Insurance Agency, whose officials will visit the affected areas," he said, reiterating that "this time we expect the government to react properly to support the producers."

He also stated that next Tuesday the specific issue will be occupied by the Agriculture Committee of the Parliament.

For his part, the District Secretary of EKA Famagusta, Giannakis Gabriel, stated that "the damage to potato crops from the severe weather has reached 80%, the producers are desperate and need the support of the government to be able to continue their profession."
