A letter to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulidis, was sent by the President of the District Organization of Famagusta, Mr. Yiannis Karousos, regarding the losses in the water supply network in the District of Famagusta.

In his letter, Mr. Karousos points out that losses in the water supply network reach 37%, while in some municipal districts they exceed 60%. This percentage translates into a loss of 4,355,410 cubic meters of water, on an annual basis, with a corresponding financial cost to the organization and therefore to the residents of the province of Famagusta which reach €3,571,436 every year.

"The effects of these losses are not only financial, but particularly environmental due to the high amounts that reach almost 64% of the Achna fence, which has a capacity of 6,8 million cubic meters", says Mr. Karousos in his letter.

The President of the Famagusta Provincial Self-Governing Organization indicates as an effective measure to combat the phenomenon of water losses, the installation of "smart" meters in the province.

"Unfortunately, I have been informed that the funding approval that existed through the Recovery and Resilience Fund amounting to 5 million euros for the Municipalities of Famagusta District, has not progressed while at the same time similar programs of other Provinces are at a later stage, either through the Recovery Fund and Resilience or through the THALEA program," says Mr. Karousos, pointing out that Famagusta is the only province on the island that has not received funding for the purchase of "smart" meters, with its citizens feeling like second-class citizens.

Through his letter, Mr. Karousos asks the President of the Republic of Cyprus to secure funding of 8 million euros for his province.

"The Famagusta District should not be wronged, that is why we are asking for your help, so that funding can be secured and we can proceed immediately with the installation of "smart" meters that will reduce water losses in the network ", concludes the President of EOA Famagusta.
