New artificial reefs are coming to Paralimni and Ayia Napa

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works announced tenders for the construction of artificial reefs in the marine protected areas (PAs) of Paralimni and Ayia Napa as well as in Geroskipou, Larnaca and "Dasoudi" of Limassol, with a total budget for all budgets. € 2.6 million.

More specifically, the basic elements of the Projects in the province of Famagusta can be summarized as follows:

Marine protected areas of Paralimni and Ayia Napa:

1. Paralimni TPP:

  • Construction of an artificial reef that occupies 630.000 sq.m.
  • 500 meters north of the existing fishing shelter Paralimni.
  • Part of the constructions is placed nearby and around the sunken boats "NEMESIS III" and "LIBERTY".
  • Creating a mooring point for boats visiting the reef area.

2. Ayia Napa TPP:

  • Construction of an artificial reef that occupies 1.850.000 sq.m.
  • 1.700 meters west of the existing Ayia Napa fishing shelter.
  • Part of the constructions is placed nearby and around the perimeter of the sunken boat "KYRENIA"

The project is co-financed by the Operational Program "Sea 2014-2020" of the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus. The cost of the Project is estimated at € 770.000, including VAT. The Contract is expected to be signed next May and its execution period is 12 months.

It is noted that the studies for all three Projects were prepared by the Marine Works Branch of the Department of Public Works of the Ministry.
