The Famagusta Tourism and Travel Association issued a statement regarding the developments in the Middle East, noting that there should be a need for self-restraint, responsibility and a realistic assessment of developments. They stressed that “the cancellations mainly concern the immediate period, the next one to three weeks, and we do not expect them to substantially affect the summer tourist season.”
Such is the announcement
As ETAP Famagusta, we are closely monitoring the developments regarding the new flare-up in the Middle East. In recent days, however, we have observed an unjustified dramatization of the situation in relation to the risks that Cyprus may be facing.
The Republic of Cyprus is rightly taking preventive measures to enhance the level of security of its citizens, against the possibility of a blind strike. However, under no circumstances should the impression be created that Cyprus is a major target for Iran or its allies.
We call on everyone to exercise restraint, calmness and a realistic assessment of developments. The reproduction of extreme scenarios and the cultivation of a warlike climate cause unnecessary panic among citizens and harm the economy of our country, especially in view of the new tourist season.
We have observed in recent days that scenarios of generalized conflict are being projected, creating the impression of a situation that is not real. We call on everyone, and especially those who shape public opinion, to be more careful and responsible in their public statements.
It is a fact that some cancellations of reservations have been recorded in hotel units in our province. However, these cancellations mainly concern the immediate period, the next one to three weeks, and we do not estimate that they will substantially affect the summer tourist season.
We hope that the tension prevailing in the Middle East will not last long and that stability in the wider region will be restored soon.
Calmness, responsibility and unity are the most important assets we have as a country.
Sincerely,
George Tofinis President of ETAP Famagusta
Panagiotis Konstantinou
Vice President of ETAP Famagusta
