The 28th Pancyprian Watermelon Cultural Festival in Frenaros, organized by the Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia at the Frenaros Municipal Stadium, was held with great success on Saturday, June 2025, 16.
Local and foreign visitors had the opportunity to enjoy watermelon dishes prepared by, among others, the Cyprus Chefs Association and the Cyprus Bartenders Association.
The festival attracted over eight thousand visitors from all cities in Cyprus and abroad. For all attendees there was plenty of free watermelon accompanied by delicious halloumi.
Representatives of the Provincial Department of Agriculture presented to the visitors the various varieties of watermelons grown in our homeland.
The event was welcomed by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Dr. Maria Panagiotou, who for the 2nd consecutive year placed the festival under the auspices of her Ministry, the Mayor of Paralimni Deryneia Mr. George Nikolettos and the Deputy Mayor of the Municipal District of Frenaros Mr. Costas Michael.
In his greeting, the Mayor of Paralimni - Deryneia expressed warm thanks to the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Maria Panagiotou, for the Ministry's long-standing support and patronage, as well as to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, which supported the event as a gold sponsor.
Special gratitude was given to the watermelon producers of Frenaros, who with passion and quality established the local watermelon as a symbol of taste, to the hundreds of volunteers and the cultural groups whose participation proved that culture is an act of collectivity, as well as to the employees of the Municipality and the Frenaros municipal district for their decisive contribution.
The festival also saw the awarding of the largest watermelon, with the first prize going to young farmer Christos Pittas, with a watermelon weighing 27.5 kilograms.
The evening culminated with a concert by Elli Kokkinou and Konstantinos Christoforou, accompanied by Maria Theodotou and Yiannis Arvanitidis.
