The Municipalities of Paralimni - Deryneia and Ayia Napa and all their Municipal Districts protested on the evening of Wednesday 04/06 at the Frenaros Municipal Council about the uncontrolled licensing, construction and operation of photovoltaic parks on state-owned chalk and agricultural land.
The Municipalities requested the rejection of all pending applications for licensing, construction and operation of photovoltaic and wind farms in the Famagusta district. They requested the cancellation of all lease certificates for state-owned halite and agricultural land of high natural value.
Photovoltaic parks should be installed on buildings and rooftops, not in orchards and fields.
Municipalities speak of environmental problems from photovoltaic parks, deterioration of the site, and possible problems with materials and waste.
The event was addressed by the Mayor of Paralimni-Deryneia, George Nikolettos, the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zannetou, the Deputy Mayor of Frenaros Municipality, Costas Michael, and the Chairman of the Agriculture Committee, Giannakis Gabriel. Members of Parliament, deputy mayors, and a large number of people from the Famagusta district were present.
