The opening of the painting exhibition by the late Frenarite painter Lefteris Economou entitled "Lefteris Economou: The sky that protected us" took place on Friday, May 9, 2025, in the event hall of the Frenar Municipal District of the Municipality of Paralimni-Deryneia.
In her response, the artist's daughter and President of the Lefteris Economou Cultural Foundation, Mrs. Christina Economou-Charalambous, stated that "the exhibition has as its theme landscapes from the Famagusta district, studies and drawings of people who lived there and beyond. It is a range of works that shows how much Economou loved and how he immortalized the Cypriot Land and its People with his great talent and sensitivity.
His works have a movement, a freshness, an incredible light, the Cypriot light, and through the colorful skies of his works we feel freedom, we relive and preserve pieces of memory and hand them down to the next generation, because the artists continue to live through their work."
The distinguished painter Lefteris Economou was born in Frenaros on March 25, 1930. During his studies at the Greek High School of Famagusta, he had the painter Telemachos Kanthos as his teacher. In 1949 he went to London, where he studied successively at the universities of St. Martin's School of Art, Sir John Cass College, Goldsmiths' School of Art, obtaining the National Diploma in Painting of Great Britain and a Diploma in Pedagogy. In 1955 he returned to Cyprus and worked as a Professor of Art in Secondary Education and then at the Teachers' College of Morphou. He retired in 1990 from the position of Inspector of Secondary Education. He was also one of the founding members of the Chamber of Fine Arts (E.K.A.T.E.), of which he was president for five years. He was honored with important distinctions both in Cyprus and abroad. He participated in dozens of individual and group exhibitions. His works adorn public buildings in Cyprus and private collections in Cyprus and abroad. He died on November 1, 2007 in Nicosia.
