Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Education expressed their satisfaction, having been informed that the School of Marine Sciences and Sustainable Development of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) in Larnaca is expected to operate in September 2027. At the same time, they also expressed satisfaction with the total of 500 new student beds that the CUT will have at its disposal by 2027.
In his statements after the end of the Committee meeting, which examined the budget of the TEPAK, the DISY MP, Giorgos Karoullas, expressed satisfaction with what is included in the budget of the Technical and Vocational Training Institute for its expansion in Larnaca and for the new study programs.
Referring to the new student beds that TEPAK will have at its disposal in the coming period (150 in the summer of 2026 and 350 in 2027), Mr. Karoullas spoke of "a very important injection into the acute housing problem for students"At the same time, he mentioned that he suggested to the Technical University of Athens to provide incentives for its students to live together, so that the rent could be shared.
At the same time, he said that he expressed his firm request for the creation of a new TEPAK school in the free province of Famagusta, noting that "it is a strategic investment in education, regional development and the new generation"He also pointed out that "The issue must and can be worked on, so as to explore the development and budgetary possibilities regarding the issue in question."
"We support a documented, organized and realistic perspective for establishing a school with a clear academic orientation and long-term planning", he stressed.
Ο DISY MP, Prodromos Alampritis, expressed particular joy for the opening of the TEPAK school in the city of Zenonas, noting that "a timeless request of the city and province of Larnaca is being satisfied, taking shape."
"We expect the projects to progress and in 2027 the first students to study in our city," he noted.
Referring to the opening of two departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Larnaca, Mr. Alabritis said that the goal is for them to operate in September 2026, noting, however, that "I am not sure if we will succeed."
Ο DIKO MP, Andreas Apostolou, expressed satisfaction because the TEPAK budget submitted before the Education Committee includes funds for the financing of buildings and the recruitment of staff for the TEPAK school in Larnaca.
In relation to the effort to operate two departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) in Larnaca (Psychology and Maritime) in September 2026, Mr. Apostolou stated that "we are pushing to find a solution to the housing issue."
Furthermore, he noted that he actively supports the efforts of the Municipality of Athienou together with the University of Thessaly to establish a Veterinary School of the University in the Municipality of Athienou. He added that he has been informed by the Minister of Education that the building issue of the Veterinary School will be resolved in the coming weeks.
At the same time, he said that he has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Health and the Municipality of Athienou for the utilization of the Athienou Medical Center building, so that it can be converted into a Medical School, given that there is interest from the University of Thessaly or another University.
Ο Member of Parliament for DIPA, Alekos Tryfonidis, stated that the budget of the Technical University of Cyprus includes the first two and a half million euros for the creation of the new Technical University of Cyprus school in Larnaca, adding that he raised again the issue of establishing the Agricultural School of the Technical University of Cyprus in the Solea-Marathasa area, in the context of rural development.
Additionally, he expressed joy at the delivery of the first 150 student beds in the Berengaria area in Polemidia in early September 2026, adding that the remaining 350 beds will be delivered in 2027. Noting that a new rent subsidy system is being implemented for students who cannot get student beds, Mr. Tryfonidis said that a thousand students will either have their own student bed in 2027 or will be partially subsidized.
He also mentioned that he suggested to the TEPAK to continue the effort to meet the needs for student beds, adding that "we will contribute decisively to this issue."
