A memorial service and event of remembrance for Kyprianos Papaioannou and those who lost their lives in the tragic train accident in Tempi two years ago were held today by students and teachers at the Kokkinochoria "Fotis Pitta" High School in Frenaros.
Students at the school where Kyprianos attended wore white sweatshirts bearing the face of the deceased young man, while others read "the sky has become richer and the earth poorer."
Both of Kyprianos' brothers attended the ceremony, while the students sang the song, "Why did you put my heart in it?", dedicated to Kyprianos.
In his greeting, the Director of the High School Antonis Stavrou stated, among other things, that "the Tempi accident that occurred on February 28, 2023 in Greece is one of the most tragic moments experienced in modern history. Due to the collision of two trains on the railway line near Tempi, 57 young children lost their lives and many others were seriously injured."
He added that "among the victims of the accident were two young children from Cyprus, Kyprianos Papaioannou and Anastasia Adamidou. Kyprianos, 23 years old, a student at the Kokkinochoria High School and the Famagusta Music School, our Kyprianos from Avgorou was a bright creature who was involved in everything."
He was, Mr. Stavrou continued, "a law student at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, a chanter, an excellent commando and a lover of Byzantine music. Kyprianos was going to get his degree and marry his beloved Christina in August 2023, but unfortunately fate had other plans."
He also mentioned that "along with Kyprianos and Anastasia, 54 other young souls who have been trying to find justice for two years flew high into the sky. The pain for the families of the victims is unbearable, they mourn and demand justice for the unexpected loss of their children, siblings and relatives."
As Mr. Stavrou said, "everyone's basic request is that the crime in Tempi not be forgotten and not covered up. And we, like the whole world, demand today that the causes be clarified and that all those responsible for the tragedy be identified and punished," he concluded.
