The President of the Famagusta District Government Organization (DGO), Yiannis Karousos, is asking the Government to immediately clarify the issue of establishing a branch of a Greek University, amid information in the press about an agreement with the Municipality of Larnaca.
As his statement:
Today, during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, we were informed by a representative of the Presidency of the Republic that one of the two Greek Universities to be established in Cyprus will establish a branch in the Famagusta District.
A development that all the bodies of the Local Government, the Members of Parliament and the organized groups of our Province welcomed with enormous satisfaction, since we have worked hard in the past to claim it.
The information circulating in the press in recent hours regarding an agreement between the Municipality of Larnaca and the same University surprises us and raises questions regarding the government's handling of the matter in question.
The least that our entire District, but especially the young people of Famagusta, deserves is information from the Government about what is actually the case. The ambiguity that exists at this time causes unnecessary confusion and shows a lack of respect for local communities. We expect the Government to clarify the issue immediately.
