Kokkinohoria High School: Rich program of activities for Erasmus+ (PICTURES)

Kokkinochoria High School "Panos Ioannou", as part of the Erasmus+ program, welcomed eight students and two teachers from Germany from September 24 to 30, 2022.

During their stay in Cyprus, many environmental and other actions took place together with the aim of highlighting the skills and cooperation between the students and raising their awareness of environmental issues.

Activities:

  1. Visit to Troodos and walk on the nature trail (Troodos-Caledonia). Admiration for biodiversity and vegetation.
  2. Visit to the Ethnographic Museum of Avgoros. Update on the way of life of the farmers of the last century and the ecological way of building houses.
  3. Visit to Kosi Smelter, garbage sorting and processing plant.
  4. Visit to the Folklore Museum of Nicosia and the mansion of Hatzigiorgakis Kornesios. German partners were briefed on the ongoing Turkish occupation and got to know Nicosia, Europe's only divided capital.
  5. Visit to Hatzigiorki Mills. Update on how to make flour and carpets/fabrics with the loom. Students made mats from used fabrics.
  6. Visit to the Mayor of Occupied Famagusta in Deryneia.
  7. Visit to the Environmental Center of Cavo Greco.
  8. Short visit to Kokkinohoria High School.

Activities at School:

Pupils and teachers from the two partner schools planted trees, built an insect hotel, pet beds and flower pots with used car tyres, which were colored in the colors of the German and Croatian flags. The students also built a model house with zero carbon dioxide emissions.

The German partners, in addition to these activities, had the opportunity to attend a Music lesson as well as the event held at the school for the proclamation of the Republic of Cyprus.

Entertainment

The school hosted a dinner for the German partners in a traditional tavern in Sotira as well as a lunch at the Landa excursion site in Ayia Napa.

Also as part of the "Be Active" week, activities were organized in the afternoon at sports facilities in Ayia Napa.

The results of the work and activities were presented to locals and tourists at Nissi Beach.

Visit to Croatia

From October 16 to 22, 2022, a group of 16 students and 4 teachers visited Croatia, specifically the town of Cakovec, a small town with a lot of history and tradition. The reception of the Croatian partners was warm and cordial. The Cypriot mission was briefed on the country's education system.

In-school activities

  1. Tour of the new zero carbon school under construction.
  2. Constructions by reusing materials and turning them into works of art.
  3. Attending a seminar on making herbal creams. Then the students themselves prepared healing creams and lipsticks.
  4. Experimental laboratory for microplastics.
  5. Attending first aid and physiotherapy courses, since in the afternoon the school also functions as a vocational school for nurses and physiotherapists.

Extracurricular activities

  1. Visit to Riznica Madimunga castle which functions as a museum. The entire history of the city is captured in this museum. The exhibits of the museum bear witness to the political and economic life of the region.
  2. Visit to a photovoltaic power plant.
  3. Visit to the environmental center Med Dremi Vodani. Information about the unique forest and its biodiversity. Our students enjoyed the walk along the banks of the Muva River.
  4. Visit to the capital of Croatia, Zagreb. Visit to the unique Tesla Museum with its impressive exhibits. Our students experienced the real conditions from the operation of a mine, watched experiments with electricity and were impressed by the models of old cars, war planes and tanks.
  5. The visit to the old town of Zagreb with the Parliament is unique.

Entertainment

  1. Visit to a traditional restaurant that offers dishes made from farm products and produces wine from its own vineyards.
  2. The Croatian partners organized a dinner event in a traditional restaurant, during which a dance group performed traditional Croatian dances.
  3. With the completion of the work, the mission left for Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Our students got to know the magic of the city even for a few hours, enjoying the walk on the Danube river.

The results of the tasks and activities were presented by the students of the two schools in the town square.
