“The Young Journalists for the Environment program is an international network of young people aged 11-21, active in more than 45 countries. Participants develop investigative journalism skills, document environmental issues and propose sustainable solutions through articles, photo reports and videos.
As part of the program, students from Paralimni High School visited the waste management unit in Limassol and the beach of Agia Triada, where they participated in a plastic removal action. With critical thinking and environmental sensitivity, they reflected on key issues of pollution and sustainability.
The Silent Cry of the Sea
A member of the “Young Journalists for the Environment” program, Maria Grigoriou, while walking along the Protaras promenade, came across a dead sea turtle on a secluded, rocky small beach. Feeling the need to give a voice to nature, she captured the moment through her lens, wanting to raise awareness of the harsh reality facing marine ecosystems.
Tragedy in disguise: Camouflaged among the rocks, the washed-up sea turtle almost looks like it belongs there. But this image hides a harsh truth: human activity is destroying the marine ecosystem. Pollution, overfishing and loss of natural habitats are leading to a gradual extinction of species. Biodiversity is at risk, and we must act.
The message is clear—will we hear it before it's too late?
