The President of EOA Famagusta Yiannis Karousos made a post after the signing of contracts for the creation of a Multifunctional Park in Ayia Napa.
Same as his post:
I am especially glad that another important project, which began its maturation and its claim during my own term as mayor, is on the way to implementation. In 2013, I asked the Municipal Engineer, Athos Georgiou, to be informed about the existing plans of the Municipality. One of the projects he suggested to me was this, telling me: "Go ahead, this will make a difference."
There was already an initial design from the time of Varvara Perikleus, on which we based our proposal, and I acknowledge it. The project was called "Thematic multifunctional environmental park in the area of the former SPE". With the recognition of Ayia Napa as an urban center in 2014, the project was proposed as one of the three important for the city, along with the upgrade of the Monastery and the regeneration of the streets of the center (Tevkrou Anthia). The idea was to connect the Monastery through Tevkrou Anthia with this park. Based on these plans we secured approvals, planning permits, land lease and financing.
We commissioned a specialized office to update the design, incorporating new ideas, such as the mosaic park (suggested by the late Kikis Konstantinou), playgrounds, cafeteria, botanical garden and other infrastructure. The project was almost ready for bidding in 2019, but was delayed due to the pandemic COVID-19 in 2020. Fortunately, the current government did not cancel it, as happened with other projects in the province.
Today, this great project for Ayia Napa begins, which will be a benchmark for the entire province. Especially the park with the mosaics and the botanical garden will be something unique. With its completion, the three major projects that we had secured in 2014, due to the recognition of Ayia Napa as an urban center, will have been completed or will be in the process of implementation. The Monastery opened its gates last Friday, the redevelopment of the streets of the center was delivered in 2022, and now the third project begins. I hope to move forward soon with the construction of the outdoor amphitheater of Ayia Napa, which we have announced twice so far.
For me, this will be the most important reference point of our province. The President of the Republic has publicly stated 18 months ago that he is looking into the matter, but we still have not received an answer.
