As part of the joint action of Eurobank and Hellenic Bank, following the initiative of the Commissioner for the Environment, Mrs. Antonia Theodosiou, a tree planting event was held today, Saturday, March 8, in the area of Kavo Gkreko, by a team of volunteers from the two banks, under the guidance of the Department of Forestry and the Forestry Association, in the presence of the Commissioner for the Environment and the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, during which over 400 local species, saplings and shrubs were planted.
In her greeting, Mrs. Theodosiou thanked the Hellenic Bank for once again funding, in collaboration with her office, an action, which, as she said, is not simple, is complex and has been decided in collaboration with the Department of Forestry and the Cyprus Forestry Association.
This action, as he explained, "consists of two axes, today we are in the one that concerns the planting of local species, saplings, shrubs, etc. in a place where you are standing today that used to be a garbage dump and is in the restoration stage, that is, serious work has already been done and the action we are taking today is part of this process of restoring this garbage dump."
At the same time, he added, "we are in the area of the Cape Greco forest park, where another action you are carrying out at this time is the construction of wood-stone walls known as domes, which will be planted with local flowers and aromatic plants and at the same time contribute to the preservation of the landscape."
The Mayor of Ayia Napa, in his greeting, thanked the organizers, the Hellenic Bank, the Commissioner for the Environment, the representative of the Department of Forestry, the Forestry Association and the volunteers for this very important action, since as he mentioned, this place had been a garbage dump for more than twenty years, as well as the President of Cymepa, for his presence at the event.
He expressed the wish that through this initiative the area would become greener and that this action would now become an annual institution because actions such as these, he added, whether they come from private or corporate initiatives, support the work of the Municipality of Ayia Napa.
In recent years, he noted, more than three and a half thousand trees have been planted and the Municipality's goal is to continue tree planting in this key area through which thousands of tourists pass, who visit the sea caves, a very important reference point of Ayia Napa, which is located a few meters below.
The CEO of Eurobank Cyprus, Mr. Andreas Petsas, and the Head of Human Resources of Hellenic Bank, Mr. George Christodoulides, thanked the Commissioner for the Environment, Ms. Antonia Theodosiou, and the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, for honoring the event with their presence, the organizers for the very good organization, the volunteers and especially the parents who convinced their children to come. In this way, they emphasized, the number of volunteers we will have at our disposal will increase and we will pass on the education to the new generation to love trees, nature and the environment.
"The scenery is beautiful, the action is excellent, the team foretells that the future will be better for everyone," they said in conclusion.
