The Department of Urban Planning and Housing (DUP) resumed the construction site of the Liopetri Fishing Shelter and River development project last Saturday, as stated in a statement by the Ministry of Interior, given that, as it notes, the site is owned by the Republic of Cyprus. It also states that the project has been divided into phases and that the estimated completion schedule for the phase concerning the construction of the paved road is the end of June 2025.
The announcement states that the TPO proceeded to terminate the employment of the engineer and the Contractor of the project in November 2024, due to the major delays in the execution of the project and the failure to comply with their contractual obligations. It is noted that the conclusions of the Audit Service recorded in its report were also relevant, as well as its recommendations to the TPO for taking drastic measures towards the contractor and the engineer.
The Ministry states that “in order to restart and complete the project as soon as possible for the benefit of the residents of Liopetri and the Famagusta district, the project has been divided into phases, with an estimated completion schedule for the phase concerning the construction of the paved road at the end of June 2025.” It is added that the Ministry of Interior remains committed to the execution of the project and is taking the appropriate actions to this end, within the framework of legality and in consultation with its legal advisor.
"Any other legal issue that arises will be resolved before a court of law and, therefore, the Ministry of Interior does not intend to publicly comment on the matter," the statement concludes.
